Hempstead, NY –
Marisa Ogden and
Annabella Pisapia helped limit St. John's to eight runners on base all game as the Hofstra softball team snapped a four-game losing streak with a 2-0 shutout win over the visiting Red Storm in a midweek non-conference contest from Bill Edwards Stadium. The win pushes Hofstra to 14-21, and St. John's drops to 21-22 following the defeat.
After the first inning ended scoreless following a terrific throw home by
Kayla Wilson to prevent London Jerrard from scoring the opening run, Hofstra was held without a hit until
Olivia Malinowski slashed a lead-off single in the fourth inning, and
Aliya Catanzarita delivered a double to deep left just shy of the wall to put runners on second and third with no outs.
Chelsea Villar gave Hofstra its lead with an RBI single past the St. John's shortstop, and the Pride made it 2-0 as Wilson scored Catanzarita on a groundout at first.
St. John's had an opportunity to score in the top of the fifth with runners on second and third and one out, but Ogden retired the next two batters to end the threat without allowing a run across for the Red Storm. Pisapia picked up her first save of the season with two strikeouts and only one baserunner allowed in two innings of work.
Catanzarita, Malinowski, Villar, Wilson,
Chelsea Manto, and
Becca Vaillancourt all recorded one hit apiece for the Pride, while Wilson drew a walk and scored an RBI. Ogden pitched 5.0 innings and struck out two St. John's batters for her first win of the season.
The Pride hits the road for a key Coastal Athletic Association series in Delaware, as Hofstra opens its three-game series against the Blue Hens on Friday, April 19, at 5 p.m.
