Malinowski, Apsel Lead Pride Past Drexel In Series Opener

Hempstead, NY - Olivia Malinowski's first career home run in the bottom of the first inning proved to be all Hofstra needed as the Pride won a Coastal Athletic Association game over visiting Drexel, 2-1, Friday afternoon at Bill Edwards Stadium.

Hofstra improved to 5-11 overall and 3-1 in CAA play with the victory. The Dragons slipped to 4-12 overall and 1-2 in league action.

Both teams got their only offense in the first inning. Drexel scored in their initial at-bat as Ameryn Humble had an RBI double that knocked in Kalea Calugay, who had reached on a fielder's choice. Hofstra would get a leadoff single from Chelsea Manto and three batters later, Malinowski launched a two-run shot over the left field fence.

From there, both pitchers took over. Drexel's Lindsay Nelson (3-6) allowed just one more hit and one more walk the rest of the game, while the Pride's Julia Apsel (4-3) worked around base runners in every inning. Drexel had the bases loaded with two outs in the fourth but Apsel induced a groundout to escape the threat.

The teams continue their series Saturday with a 1 p.m. start.

Notes:
-Alanna Morse had the Pride's other hit.
-Drexel left nine runners on base.
-Nelson had nine strikeouts for the Dragons.
-Apsel allowed eight hits, one walk and struck out three in the win.
