Hofstra Rallies In Second Half To Defeat Seton Hall

Uniondale, NY - Jaquan Sanders scored 10 of his 12 points in the second half and Jean Aranguren had eight of his team-high 13 points after intermission as Hofstra rallied to defeat Seton Hall, 49-48, at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. The game was part of the Icons of the Game doubleheader. Hofstra trailed for the majority of the second half and outscored the Pirates, 7-6, over the final 3:24 to earn the victory.

The Pride beat a Big East team for the first time since defeating St. John's, 63-51, on December 29, 2006.

Hofstra stayed perfect on the young season, moving to 3-0. Seton Hall dipped to 1-2 with the loss.

A low scoring first half saw Seton Hall hold a 24-22 advantage. The Pirates led 5-0 at the first media timeout before a Cruz Davis three-pointer put Hofstra on the board. Michael Graham's three-point play brought the Pride within one, 7-6, with 12:21 to go in the opening half. Aranguren would give Hofstra its first lead of the night, 8-7, two minutes later with a driving layup. After Hofstra took a 13-12 lead, the Pirates would go on a 7-0 run to open up a 19-13 lead on Chaunce Jenkins' three-pointer with 5:38 to play. The lead would grow to seven, 22-15 before the Pride scored seven of the final nine points.

Hofstra would tie the score twice in the opening minutes of the second half, the first at 25 on a three-point play from TJ Gadsden and then again at 27 on a layup from Aranguren. Seton Hall would then go on a 7-2 run over the next 5:20 to lead 34-29 on a layup from Jenkins. A 5-2 run by Hofstra made it a 36-34 lead for the Pirates with 9:26 to play. Sanders had a three-pointer, while Aranguren sank a pair of free throws. The Pride would take its first lead of the second half, 40-39, with 5:12 remaining on a steal and dunk by Davis. The teams would trade the lead over the next minute with Hofstra holding a 42-41 edge at the final media timeout with 3:24 to play. A 4-2 run by Seton Hall after play resumed gave it a 45-44 lead with 2:41 to go. But the Pride responded with a layup from Aranguren to retake the lead for good and a three-pointer from Sanders made it a 49-45 game in favor of Hofstra. Dylan Addae-Wusu hit a three-pointer with 51 seconds left to make it a one-point game, 49-48, and the Pirates missed a three-pointer as time expired.

In addition to his 13 points, Aranguren had six assists. Gadsden led the Pride with seven rebounds. Davis had nine points and three steals, while Silas Sunday added four rebounds and three blocks.

Jenkins led all scorers with 18 points and Addae-Wusu chipped in with 11 points and eight rebounds.
