Hempstead, NY – The Hofstra softball team's quest for a 13
th Colonial Athletic Association title remains strong as the No. 3 seed Pride meets No. 2 seed UNCW on Thursday, May 11, on day three of the 2023 CAA Softball Championship from Bill Edwards Stadium.
First pitch against the Seahawks is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. The game, as well as every game of the CAA Championship, will be streamed live on FloSoftball, the official streaming platform of the CAA. The Pride opened its CAA Championship with a 5-2 victory over Stony Brook, the No. 7 seed.
Julia Apsel struck out six batters to tie a personal-best in a complete game win, while
Becca Vaillancourt scored two RBIs in the second inning to key a four-run Hofstra inning to put them in front of Stony Brook for good.
Kasey Collins and
Kayla Wilson also drove in RBIs for the Pride, and Wilson led the team with two walks drawn. Hofstra enters Thursday with a 25-24 overall record after winning its fourth-straight game over the Seawolves.
The No. 2 seed in the CAA Championship, UNCW is 23-25 on the year and has won five of its last six games to end the regular season. The Seahawks boast four All-CAA honorees, including CAA Player of the Year and All-CAA First Team selection Janel Gamache as a utility player/pitcher. Gamache leads the conference in ERA (1.50) and is fifth in batting average (.350). Gamache was joined on the All-CAA First team by fellow pitcher Kara Hammock and outfielder Arial Pearce, while second baseman Taylor Vitola received Second Team honors.
Hofstra is 46-8 all-time against Seahawks, but the teams have split the last four meetings. The Pride and Seahawks last played one another in the 2022 CAA Championship, with UNCW coming away with a 2-1 win over Hofstra.
