Hampton, VA – The Hofstra softball team came out of the gate swinging and never looked back as the Pride downed Hampton, 11-1, in six innings to complete the sweep of the Lady Pirates from HU Pirates Softball Stadium. Hofstra moves to 18-22 overall and 10-5 in the Colonial Athletic Association, while Hampton drops to 12-23 overall and 2-12 against conference competition.
Hofstra got the scoring started with three runs in the first inning.
Kasey Collins scored the first run of the day by successfully stealing home on a double steal;
Chelsea Manto stole second, allowing Collins the opportunity to steal home.
Alanna Morse drove in the second run of the inning with a double off the outfield wall, and
Gianna Iaquinto brought Morse home with an RBI single to right field for a 3-0 lead.
Becca Vaillancourt made it 4-0 in the second inning with a sacrifice fly out, before Hofstra blew the game open with a three-run third inning to make it 7-0 Pride. Morse scored on a throwing error by the Hampton catcher to make it 5-0, while
Anna Butler drove in the sixth run of the day on an RBI single to left, and Manto scored Collins on a sacrifice fly for the third run of the inning and seventh of the contest.
Hampton scored its first run of the afternoon by way of a home run to left field, making the score 7-1. After a scoreless fifth inning for both sides, Hofstra drove in four runs in the sixth inning to put the Pride ahead by double digits over the Lady Pirates. Iaquinto drove in her second run of the day with a single up the middle into the outfield in a bases loaded situation, while
Madison McKevitt scored two RBIs with another single up the middle, and Butler drove in her second run with a sacrifice fly to right field.
Annabella Pisapia picked up the win over Hampton with one strikeout against one run and four hits allowed in four innings from the circle.
Julia Apsel made a relief appearance and allowed just one hit in two innings of work. Manto led the Pride with a perfect 3-3 from the plate and two stolen bases, while Iaquinto, McKevitt, and Butler all recorded two RBIs to lead the team.
Hofstra makes the trip to Connecticut for a non-conference game against Connecticut (28-11) on Wednesday, April 19. First pitch against the Huskies is 4 p.m.
NOTES:
-Hofstra improves its all-time record over Hampton to 4-0.
-The Pride tallied 13 hits against the Lady Pirates, tying a single-game high for the 2023 season.
-Hofstra drove in nine RBIs, a new season-high.
