Four Hofstra Wrestlers Remain In Contention After Day One Of EIWA Championships

Philadelphia, PA - Justin Hoyle, Ross McFarland, Jacob Ferreira, and Trey Rogers each advanced to the consolation quarterfinals following day one of the 2023 EIWA Championships at The Palestra. Hofstra is in 12th-place out of 17 teams with 22 points. 

Hoyle, the ninth seed at 141 pounds, won his opening round of 16 match over Jordan Soriano of Drexel, 8-1, before losing to top-seeded Vince Cornella (Cornell) by fall in 4:32. In his consolation round match, Hoyle got past Raymond Lopez of American, 9-6. Hoyle will face No. 5 Malyke Hines of Lehigh Sunday.

McFarland, seeded 10th at 174 pounds, picked up a round of 16 win over the defending champion and seventh seed Philip Conigliaro of Harvard, 3-1, before falling in a close quarterfinals match to No. 2 Nick Incontera of Penn. He won his consolation match against Brown's Drew Clearie, 8-3, to advance to face No. 6 Sammy Starr of Navy.

Ferreira, the No. 4 seed at 184 pounds, won by decision over No. 13 Mason McCready of Bucknell, 6-2, in the round of 16. He suffered an 8-3 loss to the No. 5 seed, Nate Dugan of Princeton in the quarterfinals. Ferreira rebounded for an exciting 4-2 sudden victory decision over No. 10 Leo Tarantino of Harvard. Ferreira will face No. 11 James Conway of Franklin & Marshall in the consolation quarterfinals Sunday. 

Rogers, the five seed at 197 pounds, started his day with a round of 16 win over No. 12 John Dusza of LIU, 10-4. He dropped a 9-7 decision to No. 4 Jacob Koser of Navy in the quarters before coming back strong with an 11-2 major decision over Bucknell's Nolan Springer. Rogers will face No. 9 Sean O'Malley of Drexel on Sunday. 

Action gets underway Sunday at 10:30 a.m.
