Ferreira, Rogers Move to Wrestlebacks at NCAA Championships

Tulsa, OK – Hofstra's Jacob Ferreira and Trey Rogers both opened Session I at the 2023 NCAA Wrestling Championships with losses in their opening round matches, dropping the two upperclassmen into the wrestleback brackets from BOK Arena in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
 
The No. 28 seed in the 184-pound bracket, Ferreira suffered a 12-3 major decision loss to Marcus Coleman, the No. 5 seed from Iowa State. Coleman scored a takedown in the first period to lead, 2-0, before scoring five points to Ferreira's one point in the second period to take a 7-1 lead into the third period. Coleman would score another four points, plus one point for riding time, in the third period to hand Ferriera the defeat.
 
In the 197-pound bracket, the No. 29 seed Rogers was beaten by 10-5 decision against No. 4 seed Ethan Laird from Rider. Rogers scored an escape late in the first period to make it a 2-1 score, and he scored three more points from escapes in the second period to make it a 6-4 score, but Laird scored four points in the third period on a takedown, an escape, and riding time to win the match over the EIWA automatic qualifier Rogers.
 
Ferreira and Rogers both move to the wrestlebacks bracket, set to begin at 6 p.m. Central/7 p.m. Eastern in Session Two, where Ferreira will face the No. 21 Guiseppe Hoose of Buffalo, and Rogers will take on the No. 20 seed Evan Bockman from Utah Valley.
