Athens, GA - The Hofstra softball team worked a little extra today as they earned a 6-5 victory over California Baptist in eight innings at the University of Georgia Classic at Jack Turner Stadium.
The win was Hofstra's first of the season as they improved to 1-9 following an early season gauntlet of a schedule. California Baptist falls to 6-9 with the loss.
Hofstra got off to a great start in the game, leading 4-0 after three innings.
The Pride got its first run of the contest as
Chelsea Manto singled home
Kayla Wilson with two outs in the second after Wilson had led off the inning with a single to right center.
Hofstra would do a ton of damage in the third frame as the Pride loaded the bases with no outs on three consecutive walks. After California Baptist recorded a pair of outs, Gianna Ioppolo brought home
Becca Vaillancourt for the Pride's second run of the game.
Alanna Morse would then have the biggest hit of the inning as she singled up the middle and two runs scored on the play with Wilson and
Aliya Catanzarita coming home.
California Baptist rallied to knot the score at four with runs in the fourth, fifth, and seven innings to send the game to extra innings.
In the eighth inning, the Pride fell behind 5-4 before mounting the rally. With one out and two runners on, Hofstra knotted the score at five as Ioppolo scored Iaquinto via a single. Hofstra would then load the bases as Manto walked with two outs and brought
Kasey Collins to the plate with the score tied at five. Collins would get the unique game-winning RBI as she walked on four pitches with Wilson coming home on the walk and providing Hofstra with its first win of the season.
Nikki Mullin started the game for Hofstra and worked four innings, allowing only one run. Ioppolo finished with two RBIs in the contest, while Wilson tallied a career-high tying three runs scored.
Hofstra is back in action next weekend when it travels to The Spring Games in Tampa, Florida, beginning on Friday. The Pride will face Bethune-Cookman, Central Michigan, Coastal Carolina, Holy Cross, and Yale over the three days.
