1/26/2023 9:07:00 PM

Vestal, NY - Justin Hoyle recorded a major decision and Trey Rogers had a tech fall victory but it was not enough as the Bearcats claimed the other eight weight classes in a 27-8 Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association victory Thursday night at West Gym.

Hofstra slipped to 2-3 overall and 1-3 in conference action with the loss. It also snapped a two-match winning streak for the Pride. Binghamton is 4-9 overall and 3-2 in the EIWA.

The Bearcats won the first two weights with decisions at 125 and 133 to take a 6-0 lead. Hoyle then scored a 10-1 major decision over Nate Lucier at 141 pounds to cut the Pride's deficit to two, 6-4.

Binghamton then pulled away in the match with five consecutive wins including a major at 149 by Michael Zarif and a tech fall at 165 by Brevin Cassella to go up 24-4. The final match of the five was a battle between a pair of nationally-ranked grapplers as No. 19 Jacob Nolan of Binghamton scored a 4-2 sudden victory decision over Hofstra's No. 21 Jacob Ferreira. The two battled to a 2-2 tie after three periods before Nolan got a takedown with 25 seconds to go in the first overtime period.

Rogers, ranked 27th in the nation in the coaches poll at 197 pounds, put on a clinic in a 24-8 tech fall over Dimitri Gamkrelidze. That would be Hofstra's final victory as the Bearcats No. 18 Cory Day posted a decision at 285 pounds to close out the match.

Hofstra returns to action Saturday at Navy with a 1 p.m. start time in Annapolis.
