Zachary Knighton-Ward came to an end Thursday night inside Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan at the 2022 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships.
The #31-seed from Uniondale, New York, Knighton-Ward suffered a 10-8 defeat in sudden victory overtime of his 285-lb. consolation bracket match against Taye Ghadiali of Campbell. Knighton-Ward took an early 2-0 lead with a single-leg takedown inside the first 30 seconds of the first period. He earned over one minute of riding time before Ghadiali, the SoCon champion at 285 lbs. and the #15-seed in the bracket, escaped to bring the score to 2-1 after the first period.
Ghiadali tied the score at 2-2 with an escape early in the second period, but Knighton-Ward stuffed a takedown attempt from the Campbell heavyweight before spinning behind Ghadiali for the two points, carrying a 4-2 lead into the third period.
Knighton-Ward got to his feet to up his lead to three points over Ghadiali, but the Campbell wrestler scored three takedowns to bring the match into sudden victory overtime thanks to over a minute of riding time for Knighton-Ward. Ghadiali denied a single-leg attempt from Knighton-Ward and earned the overtime win with his own single-leg takedown.
Knighton-Ward's season ends with an 18-9 overall record after his third consecutive trip to the NCAA Championships.
