WREST: Hofstra Returns with Road Defeat to Drexel

2/5/2022 4:29:00 PM

Philadelphia, PA - For the first time in two weeks, the Hofstra wrestling team returned to the mat for a dual match. The Pride started the match off strong against Drexel, but the Dragons pulled out the 27-13 win over the Pride from the Daskalakis Athletic Center. Hofstra moves to 2-10 overall and 1-4 against EIWA opponents, and Drexel is now 4-6 overall and 3-2 against conference competition.

Following a win by pin for the Dragons at 174 pounds, the Pride reeled off wins in three consecutive weights to pull ahead 13-6. Charles Small earned a tight 7-6 decision over Bryan McLaughlin at 184 with a third-period escape, while Trey Rogers dominated Santino Morina in a 17-6 major decision at 197, and Zachary Knighton-Ward put Liam Dietrich on the mat quickly and got the pin at 2:06 of his 285 match.

Following Knighton-Ward's win, the Dragons won the next six matches to take the EIWA dual. Drexel won by major decision at 125, decision at 133, 141, 157 and 165, and tech fall at 149. Following the match at 165, a pair of extra matches were held that did not count towards the team score, but did count towards the individual wrestlers records. Small won by 8-5 decision against Josh Stillings at 184, and Ben Somerville suffered a 5-3 decision loss at 285.

Hofstra returns to the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition for a tri-meet on Saturday, February 12, to conclude the home portion of the 2021-22 schedule. The Pride will honor its departing seniors prior to a 1 p.m. dual against Harvard, and the day will conclude with a dual against Sacred Heart at 3 p.m.
