Hofstra Announces 2022-23 Team Captains

| By:
Hempstead, NY – As the Hofstra wrestling program prepares for its Wrestle-Offs on Saturday, October 29, Head Wrestling Coach Dennis Papadatos and the coaching staff have announced that members of the wrestling team have voted Zachary Knighton-Ward, Ross McFarland, and Trey Rogers as team captains for the 2022-23 season of Hofstra wrestling.

A 285-pound wrestler from Uniondale, New York, Knighton-Ward was an at-large qualifier for the NCAA Championship after placing sixth at the EIWA Championships. Knighton-Ward finished the 2021-22 season with an 18-9 record, including an 11-4 mark in dual matches, and a perfect 7-0 record in duals against EIWA competition. One of four NWCA Scholar All-Americans last season, Knighton-Ward was the recipient of the Hofstra Wrestling Strength Award and the Nick Gallo Team MVP.

Wrestling at 174 pounds from Pennellville, New York, McFarland battled to a 2-7 record in 2021-22 after a breakout 2020-21 season that saw him wrestle as the second-seed in the EIWA Championships. McFarland is a two-time recipient of the EIWA Academic Achievement Award in 2020-21 and again in 2021-22.

A starter at 197 pounds from Hastings, Minnesota, Rogers went 16-7 overall, 12-4 in duals, and 8-1 in EIWA dual matches. Rogers picked up a win in sudden victory overtime against Braxton Amos of Wisconsin, the 16th-ranked wrestler in his weight class by InterMat at the time. Rogers received NWCA Scholar All-America honors and was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District At-Large First Team for the second consecutive year.

The 2022 Hofstra Wrestle-Offs will take place on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. from the David S. Mack Physical Education Center, and can be viewed on the Hofstra Pride YouTube channel. The Pride officially begins the 2022-23 season at the Princeton Open on November 6.
