SB: Hofstra Splits Long Island Rivalry Against Stony Brook

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Hofstra softball team drew a 1-1 split against the Stony Brook Seawolves in the Long Island Rivalry at University Field on Tuesday afternoon. Hofstra defeated the opposition in game one, 4-1 before suffering a 4-3 extra-inning decision in the nightcap.

A trio of Pride players tallied three hits on the day, as senior Devyn Losco, sophomore Chelsea Manto and junior Jaycee Ruberti all went 3-for-7 on the day with Ruberti leading the bunch with three RBI. Graduate student Kristin Hallam added a pair of hits including a triple in game one while also scoring twice. Hofstra was once again dangerous on the base paths as the team went 7-for-7 on stolen bases including three by Manto and two by Ruberti.

Game 1: Hofstra 4, Stony Brook 1

Hofstra scored four runs on just six hits in game one against Stony Brook, as Ruberti went 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI while Giordano also drove in two runs. The teams exchanged runs in the first inning with Hofstra scoring on an RBI ground out by Giordano before Stony Brook knocked an RBI double to left field.

After Hallam reached on an infield single, stole second, and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Manto, Ruberti laced a double that plated Hallam to give Hofstra a 2-1 lead. The Pride made it a two-run game when Ruberti scored on another RBI-groundout by Giordano later in the inning. Junior Kasey Collins led off the top of the fifth with a walk before crossing home on a Ruberti sacrifice fly to increase Hofstra's lead to 4-1.

Junior Madison Burns tossed a gem inside the circle, picking up her fifth victory of the season (5-5) while firing three strikeouts. Burns surrendered just three hits during her outing and retired 13-straight batters spanning from the first to sixth inning.

Game 2: Stony Brook 4, Hofstra 3 (8 inn.)

Hofstra got started off with a bang once again as Hallam tripled to left field and scored on a dropped third strike for the early advantage. The Pride extended that lead to two in the third as Ruberti drove in Manto with a base hit to center field. After two scoreless at-bats by both teams, Hofstra made it a 3-0 game when Losco ripped a double to left-center field to score Ioppolo all the way from first base.

The Stony Brook bats woke up in the sixth as the Seawolves plated three runs on three hits to knot the game at 3-3. Stony Brook hit a one-out single in the bottom of the seventh, but Hofstra turned a 4-6-3 double play to force the game into extra innings.

Giordano led off the eighth with a base hit to center field and successfully moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, but that was all Hofstra was able to put together as Stony Brook went on to secure the game-winning hit in the bottom half of the frame to finalize the score, 4-3.

Freshman Annabella Pisapia earned the start and pitched 5.1 total frames, five of which were scoreless. Burns entered in the sixth and ultimately suffered the loss, tossing 2.0 innings while surrendering three hits.
