Brianna Morse drove in two runs on two hits and sophomore
Nikki Mullin tossed a fantastic complete-game inside the circle as the Hofstra softball team edged the Seton Hall Pirates in a non-conference contest at Bill Edwards Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
Morse finished her day 2-for-2 at the plate, while sophomore
Chelsea Manto also picked up a pair of hits and scored once. Senior
Devyn Losco scored twice for Hofstra and added one hit.
Morse broke the game open in the second inning when she knocked a two-out single to center field. After Mullin retired the side in order, junior center fielder
Jaycee Ruberti tacked on a second run for Hofstra one inning later with a sacrifice fly, scoring Manto who led off the frame with a base hit to left field.
Hofstra increased the lead to three runs when Morse stepped up once again with two outs, smacking a double to left field to score Losco who led off the inning with a bunt single and was put into scoring position with a throwing error by the Seton Hall third baseman.
The Pirates scraped up its only run in the top of the sixth inning when Darby Pandolfo double down the third base line. Mullin shut the door in the final chance for Seton Hall, as only one runner reached base for the remainder of the game for Seton Hall.
Mullin surrendered just four hits on the day and walked only one batter. She improved to 4-2 on the season with the win. Kelsey Carr dropped to 3-7 overall for Seton Hall.
Hofstra returns to action for a key Colonial Athletic Association series this weekend against the Drexel Dragons. The Pride will host Drexel in a doubleheader at 2 and 4 p.m. on Saturday before closing out the weekend with a single-game on Sunday at 2 p.m.
NOTES:
-Hofstra improved to 15-12 against Seton Hall in the all-time series
-Hofstra now has 76 stolen bases on the season, one away from tying a program record set in 2019.
