WSOC: Hofstra Advances to NCAA Second Round

Hempstead, NY – The Hofstra University women's soccer team used a three-goal effort to blank the Providence College Friars, 3-0 in first round action of the NCAA Women's Soccer Championship at the Hofstra Soccer Stadium on Saturday, November 13. With the win, Hofstra advances to the NCAA second round for the third time in the last four seasons.

The Pride scored the first two goals of the contest before a lightning delay halted competition for one hour and 32 minutes. After chances early on from both teams, freshman Georgia Brown flicked in a header to the back left post in the 27th minute to give Hofstra a 1-0 advantage before Porter doubled Hofstra's lead nearly five minutes later. Porter leaped above the defense to head in a corner by senior forward Miri Taylor. After a pair of saves exchanged by both goalkeepers, Hofstra carried the 2-0 advantage into the halftime break.

Second half play began with a shot by Providence's Meg Hughes before the sky quickly darkened and wind picked up causing a weather delay at 2:22 p.m. Following torrential winds, hail, and heavy rain, play resumed at 3:54 p.m. with temperatures significantly colder. Just 13 seconds into play, the Pride extended their lead to three goals when Taylor gained possession, beat two defenders, and dribbled nearly 40 yards to the top of the six-yard box to push Hofstra's lead to 3-0.

Providence managed two shots for the remainder of the match while Hofstra tallied one the rest of the way, but the 3-0 deficit was too much to overcome for the Friars as the Pride clinched a spot in the NCAA second round.

Hofstra will now face the University of South Carolina in the NCAA Second Round on Friday, November 19. The second round will take place at the University of Southern California. More information about the match will follow.
