HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The Hofstra University softball team opened up its home slate on Tuesday against the University of Connecticut. The Pride dropped the mid-week battle to the Huskies by a score of 7-0.
Hofstra tallied five hits on the day, led by sophomore
Meghan Giordano who went 2-for-3 at the plate with one double. Senior
Alexis Goeke, sophomore
Madison McKevitt and junior
Jessie Joy all had one base hit.
Sophomore
Madison Burns got off to a hot start in the circle and despite allowing a runner to reach third after a single up the middle, Burns recorded three strikeouts in the inning. UConn caught up to Burns in the second when Carli Cutler drove in two runs with a base hit to right field. After another run in the third, the Huskies extended its lead to 7-0 with two home runs by Briana Marcelino and Samantha Barnett.
Hofstra loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh when Giordano led off the inning with a double, Joy reached on a throwing error, and freshman
Chelsea Manto walked, but the Huskies recorded the final out of the game with a fielder's choice.
Inside the circle, sophomore
Madison Burns pitched 5.0 innings and struck out five batters. Sophomore
Mackenzie Suto pitched 2.0 innings and relief and surrendered no runs, no walks, and one hit while striking out three. UConn improved to 16-5 on the season while Hofstra dropped to 3-15.
Hofstra returns to action this weekend at the St. John's Invitational. The Pride will play four opponents including St. John's, UConn, Holy Cross and Hartford. Action at Red Storm Field begins on Friday, March 13 at 11 a.m.
