St. Bonaventure, NY - Senior
Jalen Ray had 28 points and junior
Isaac Kante posted a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds but Hofstra could not put the finishing touches on an incredible comeback as they fell to St. Bonaventure, 77-69, on Saturday afternoon in the Reilly Center. The Pride trailed early in the game, 30-7, before eventually taking the lead in the second half.
Ray's 28 points leave him one point shy of becoming the 39th player in program history to reach 1,000 career points. The point total in the game for Ray was also one off his career of 29 set on Wednesday at Monmouth.
The loss drops the Pride's record to 3-3 this season, while the Bonnies improved to 2-0.
An early three-pointer from senior
Tareq Coburn gave the Pride a 5-4 advantage with 17:18 on the clock. At that point, St. Bonaventure put together an impressive 26-2 run to open up a 30-7 advantage at the 9:39 mark following a three-pointer from Jaren Holmes.
Hofstra slowly chipped away at the deficit and a 10-2 run, helped by five points from junior
Omar Silverio, closed the gap to 32-17 with 7:25 left in the opening half. The Pride added a late 7-0 scoring spurt, all scored by Ray, to make it 39-28 with two minutes left in the opening stanza.
Five straight early in the second half made it a 10-point game, 45-35, in favor of the Bonnies with three minutes elapsed.
The Pride would continue to keep the pressure on in the second half and would be facing a 53-40 deficit with 14:33 left in regulation before putting together a spectacular comeback. Hofstra took over and used a 24-6 run to turn a 13-point deficit into a five-point lead, 64-59, with 6:08 left on the clock. Ray was huge throughout the run as he had 15 points himself during the game-changing run.
The two teams would battle back and forth over the final few minutes with St. Bonaventure retaking the lead with a 9-0 run to hold a 71-66 advantage with 2:32 remaining. The Bonnies surge proved too much to overcome for the Pride as the home squad would escape with the narrow victory.
Freshman
Kvonn Cramer added seven rebounds for Hofstra, which got six assists and five points from sophomore
