Hempstead, NY - The Hofstra Strength and Conditioning department hosted a successful clinic on December 15 as the group hosted approximately 30 strength and conditioning personnel from around the area.
Led by Hofstra's incredible strength and conditioning staff of
Jimmy Prendergast (head strength and conditioning coach),
Ashley Christy (assistant strength and conditioning coach), and
Justin Bentivegna (assistant strength and conditioning coach), the day focused on exchanging ideas and working to get better in all that each staff does for their respective student-athletes.
The clinic began at 8 a.m. and concluded around 3 p.m. and was held in Joseph M. Margiotta Hall on Hofstra's south campus.
The day began with an early bird lift, sponsored by Sorinex Exercise Equipment, at 8 a.m. in Hofstra's expansive Margiotta Hall weight room.
Christy opened up the speaking portion as she discussed "Training the Softball Athlete". Christy covered everything from programming to building and sustaining a championship culture. She presented her annual plan and a video montage of what it looks like to be a part of a Hofstra softball training session.
Next up was Prendergast and his focus was "Ten Years on the Turnpike". The clinic was hosted on Prendergast's 10-Year anniversary to the day in which he was hired at Hofstra. He was able to cover topics such as his progression from intern to head of the department, structuring the department, work-life balance, coaching philosophy, and building relationships with alumni.
Following lunch, which was sponsored by X-Factor Performance Meals, Joel DeMarco from Connecticut spoke on "Velocity Based Training and the Power of Athlete Profiling". DeMarco went into detail on how to program for the individual, while utilizing the power of autoregulation through VBT. He taught the group how to create a velocity profile and program throughout the year.
The final presentation of the day was from Buffalo's director of strength and conditioning for Olympic sports Sean Conaty. He spoke on the topic "Training Load and Recovery in College Basketball". Conaty described various ways to incorporate technology for athlete monitoring. He spoke about key metrics that should be assessed, and how to assess them. Conaty gave a detailed overview of his process and how it has evolved over time.
The day concluded with a hands-on demonstration from RepOne in which attendees were able to learn about the benefits of velocity-based training, and how their product can take athlete performance to the next level.
Hofstra would like to extend a special thank you to its sponsors - X-Factor Performance Meals, RepOne, Honey Stinger, Sorinex Exercise Equipment, Built To Last, and Jersey Mike's.
