Ostap Kovalenko and
Jun Sasagawa advanced to the finals of their respective singles flights and finished as runners-up as play concluded at the Hofstra Invitational Saturday afternoon.
Kovalenko, playing in the B Singles draw, defeated Andris Gudins of Fairleigh Dickinson in the semifinals, 6-4, 7-5, before falling to Udayan Shakar of St. John's, 6-2, 6-1, in the finals.
Sasagawa bested Francisco Gonzalez of Queens in the C Singles semifinals, 6-2, 6-2, and then dropped a 6-2, 6-4 decision to Charlie James of St. John's in the finals.
Shawn Jackson (A Singles), Jonathan Mahrt Goyou (D) and
Yusuke Nishitani (D) each lost their semifinal matches. Jackson fell to Ogi Trejgut of St. John's, 6-1, 7-5. Mahrt Goyou lost to Maciej Autuch of FDU, 6-3, 2-6, 10-4, while Nishitani was defeated by Yousseff Sader of FDU in the other semifinal, 6-2, 6-2.
The doubles teams of Jackson and
Alvaro Arce Lopez-Sanchez and
Giacomo Pezzoli and Sasagawa at the A flight, and Kovalenko and Mahrt Goyou at B doubles also were tripped up in the semifinals. Jackson and Lopez-Sanchez lost to Kareem Rashad/Mariano Bibiloni (Queens), 6-3, in one A semifinal, while Pezzoli and Sasagawa dropped the other to Charlie James/Ignacio Garcia of St. John's, 6-3. Kovalenko and Mahrt Goyou were defeated by Mehdi Dhouib/Eduardo Cabral of FDU in one of the B Flight semifinals, 6-4.
Hofstra returns to action at home on October 11 versus St. Francis Brooklyn. Match time is 3 p.m.
