Hempstead, NY - Hofstra saw five players advance to the semifinals of their respective singles flights, and all three doubles teams advanced as well on day one of the Hofstra Invitational Friday.

Shawn Jackson (A), Ostap Kovalenko (B), Jun Sasagawa (C), and Jonathan Mahrt Goyou and Yusuke Nishitani (D) were the singles players who advanced. The doubles teams of Jackson and Alvaro Arce Lopez-Sanchez and Giacomo Pezzoli and Sasagawa at the A flight, and Kovalenko and Mahrt Goyou at B doubles also moved on to the semifinals.

Jackson picked up an 8-5 win over Henrique Souza of Adelphi in the round of 16 and then defeated St. Francis Brooklyn's Pau Grabuleda, 8-6, in the quarterfinals. The Hofstra captain will face Ogi Trejgut of St. John's in Saturday's semifinal.

Kovalenko downed Hugo Evangelista in his round of 16 match and then defeated Siena's Guillermo Torres in the quarterfinals, 8-3. He will meet Andris Gudins of Fairleigh Dickinson in the semifinals.

Sasagawa had a pair of 8-1 wins over Geovanny Mendoza (Siena) and Andrei Oprisor (FDU) to reach the semifinals, where he will meet Francisco Gonzalez of Queens.

Mahrt Goyou posted an 8-4 win over Griffen Barnett of Siena in the round of 16 and then won against Pietro Sole of Adelphi by retirement. He will face Maciej Autuch of FDU in the semifinals. Nishitani had an 8-4 win over Tom Just of St. Francis and followed that with an 8-2 victory against Matt Nardone of Siena. Nishitani will meet Yousseff Sader (FDU) in the other D Flight semifinal.

In the A Doubles draw, Jacskon and Lopez-Sanchez picked up a 6-1 win over Eduardo Marino/Lucas Demuth (Queens) in the opening round and then dropped Pau Grabuleda/Tomas Dirube (St. Francis) by a 6-3 score to reach the semifinals against Kareem Rashad/Mariano Bibiloni (Queens).

Also at A Doubles, Pezzoli and Sasagawa defeated David Robres/Luke Stirling (Adelphi), 6-2, and Andris Gudins/Teodors Pukse (FDU), 7-6, to reach the other semifinal. The Pride duo will face Charlie James/Ignacio Garcia of St. John's.

In the B Flight, Kovalenk and Mahrt Goyou defeated Daniel Blasco/Tom Just (St. Francis), 7-5, in the round of 16 and Sagar Bains/Matt Nardone of Siena in the quarters, 6-4. They will meet Mehdi Dhouib/Eduardo Cabral (FDU) in the semifinals.

Second day play at the Hofstra Invitational gets underway Saturday morning at 9 a.m.
