HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The Hofstra University Softball team tallied 12 hits on its way to a 6-1 victory over Long Island rival Stony Brook University in a non-conference game on Wednesday at Bill Edwards Stadium. Hofstra improves to 16-15 on the year while Stony Brook drops to 15-10 overall.
For the first time this season, every Pride player in the lineup tallied at least one hit, as freshman
Imani Myint was perfect at the plate with a career-high three hits and two stolen bases. Senior
Courtney Scarpato also tallied two hits including the 100
th of her career in her first at bat of the game. All other players in the batting order tallied one hit, with freshman
Kasey Collins going 1-for-2 with one walk, two RBI, and one run scored.
Freshman
Mackenzie Suto tossed her sixth complete-game of the season, allowing a just three hits while striking out three.
Stony Brook opened up the contest with a run in the first inning, but Hofstra had the quick response in the bottom half of the frame when Collins drew a 10-pitch leadoff walk before freshman
Meghan Giordano pushed her over with a single up the middle. Scarpato knocked both runners home when she smacked a double to left field and advanced to second base, allowing freshman
Angelina Ioppolo to easily score the senior with a hard-hit single up the middle.
The second, third, and top of the fourth innings all went scoreless with each team only tallying one hit per at bat, but Hofstra extended the lead to three runs with a sacrifice fly by Collins, scoring freshman
Madison McKevitt who reached base with a well-hit double to right center. The Pride added insurance runs in the bottom half of the sixth when Collins slapped the ball just inside the left field line for an RBI double, allowing Myint to score from second before Hofstra added one final run on a Stony Brook throwing error following a
Kristin Hallam bunt single.
Stony Brook put its first two runners on base in the top of the seventh, but Suto pitched three-straight outs including two fielder's choices and one strikeout.
Hofstra has a big weekend ahead with a three-game series against the No. 20/18 ranked James Madison Dukes. The Pride will play in a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. before finishing out the weekend with a single game on Sunday at 12 p.m.
NOTES:
-Hofstra now leads the all-time series over Stony Brook, 15-5. Hofstra has now won three-straight games against the Seawolves.
-Hofstra has posted double digit hit totals in 12 games this season
-Hofstra has now scored in the first inning in 17 of 30 games this season and is 10-6 when scoring in the first frame.
-Hallam now has 20 stolen bases this season, one away from tying for fourth all-time in a single season at Hofstra
-Scarpato tallied her 100
th career hit in her first at bat of the day. She reached the milestone in just three seasons with 27 hits during her sophomore year, 41 during her junior and 32 (now 33) her senior year.
-Collins was involved in a season-high eight defensive plays (six putouts, two assists) and did not commit an error.
