WTEN: Hofstra Falls To UNCW In CAA Championship First Round Match

Elon, NC - Hofstra won two singles flights, but eighth-seeded UNCW picked up a 4-2 win over No. 9 Hofstra in the first round of the 2019 CAA Women's Tennis Championship Wednesday at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center on the campus of Elon University.
 
UNCW (9-11) advances to face top-seeded William & Mary at 9 a.m. in Thursday's quarterfinals, while Hofstra's season comes to an end with a 12-11 record.
 
The Seahawks jumped out to the early lead by capturing the doubles point. UNCW's top duo of Sabrina Barisano and Maddy Muller-Hughes defeated the Pride's Sarah Catherine Herndon and Jasmine King, 6-2. The Seahawks' No. 3 tandem of Lea Dubois-Rebiere and Rachel Marthinsen clinched the point by winning the final three games in a 6-3 victory over Ronia Dolabany and Odessa Stork.
 
UNCW extended its advantage to 3-0 in singles as Marthinsen defeated Dolabany, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 6 and Barisano got past King, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 2. Hofstra battled back to make it a 3-2 match with wins at No. 1 and No. 4. Alejandra Ruffini defeated Muller-Hughes, 6-2, 6-3, at the top flight and Katherine Kacharov picked up a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Dubois-Rebiere at No. 4. But the match was decided at No. 5 when Rishika Ravindran edged Odessa Stork, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3.
 
Hofstra's 12 wins marks the fifth consecutive season that the Pride have recorded double-digit victories.
