SB: Hofstra Scores Final Five Runs During Comeback Win at Drexel

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Hofstra University Softball team scored the final five runs of the contest, as the Pride posted a come from behind victory over the Drexel Dragons in extra innings at the Drexel Softball Field on Friday afternoon. Hofstra improves to 17-19 on the season and 4-7 in the Colonial Athletic Association while Drexel drops to 24-14-1 and 7-3 in the CAA.

Seven Pride Players tallied at least one hit, but junior Alexis Goeke had a led the team at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two RBI including her first career home run in the sixth. Sophomore Devyn Losco also had a pair of hits while driving in one run and scoring another. Freshman Jaycee Ruberti and freshman Meghan Giordano both knocked in a pair of runs while also drawing one walk each. Finally, freshman Kasey Collins and junior Kristin Hallam scored two runs each.

It looked like Drexel had total control through the first two innings, as the Dragons plated four-straight runs, including a solo home run by Linda Rush in the first frame. Despite getting off to a rocky start, freshman Madison Burns five of her next six batters, pitching two-straight 1-2-3 innings that featured a Hofstra double play in the fourth.

Hofstra trimmed the Drexel deficit to just two in the top of the fifth when Ruberti smacked a two-RBI single up the middle. Burns continued to hold things down in the circle as she retired three more batters in a row, but Hofstra stayed in the game late, adding two more tallies in the top of the sixth when Goeke drilled a two-out homer to left field.

Drexel quickly responded with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, sending Hofstra to what could have been their final at bats with the score, 8-4 in favor of the Dragons.

Collins led off the top of the inning with a walk, before Hofstra reached on two-straight Drexel errors, the second allowing Collins to score from second base. Giordano drove in another run with a base hit to right field, and freshman Angelina Ioppolo brought the game within one with another hard-hit single through the right side. Losco would then tie the game at eight with a base hit down the right field line, but Drexel recorded two-straight outs to end the Hofstra rally. Drexel put one runner on base in the bottom of the second, but two-straight outs sent the contest into extras.

Hallam beat out an infield single to third, and moved up two bases on a stolen base and wild pitch, allowing Giordano to easily score Hallam off a ground ball to second base. In the field, Burns shut the door, retiring the side in order for the fourth time to earn the key CAA win.

The Dragons and Pride will now play in a doubleheader, tomorrow, Saturday April 13, beginning at 11 a.m. at the Drexel Softball Field in Philadelphia, Pa.

NOTES:
-Goeke hit the first home run of her collegiate career
-Hallam recorded one stolen base and now has 22 on the season which is sole possession of third all-time at Hofstra. She needs three more to tie for second and four more to tie for first.
-Hofstra posted its largest come from behind win of the season, and it was the first time this season that Hofstra won when trailing after five innings
-Giordano is on a 13-game reached base streak and Ruberti is on a four-game hitting streak
