SB: Hofstra Drops Non-Conference Game to LIU Brooklyn

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Hofstra University Softball Team dropped a non-conference game to the LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds on Thursday evening by a score of 6-3 at LIU Field. Hofstra drops to 14-13 on the year while LIU Brooklyn improved to 17-12.

Junior Kristin Hallam was one of two Pride players who had a multi-hit game, as she went 2-for-4 at the plate while scoring two runs. Sophomore Devyn Losco also had a pair of hits, but it was Giordano and Scarpato who knocked in all of Hofstra's runs as Giordano tallied two RBI while Scarpato had one.

Freshman Mackenzie Suto suffered the loss for Hofstra, pitching 3.1 innings in the circle allowing five runs while striking out two. Freshman Madison Burns tossed 2.2 innings in relief with one run allowed and one strikeout.

In the top of the first, Hallam led off with an infield single to shortstop and stole second base, allowing Scarpato to easily send Hallam home on a perfectly placed single as Hofstra took the 1-0 edge after one inning. Two innings later, Hofstra made it a 3-0 game when Giordano drilled her ninth home run of the season to left field to once again score Hallam who started the inning with a base hit to right field.

The Blackbirds went down in order in the third, but the fourth inning proved to be the difference maker as LIU Brooklyn scored all six of its runs in the frame to take a three-run advantage over the Pride. Hofstra loaded the bases in its next at bats when freshman Kasey Collins, freshman Angelina Ioppolo and freshman Jaycee Ruberti all reached base, but a pitching change by the Blackbirds took care of the final out to end Hofstra's threat.

Hofstra was only able to muster up two hits during the final two innings, capped off by a two-out triple by Ioppolo down the left field line in the seventh, however LIU Brooklyn captured the final out to finalize the score.

Hofstra will quickly turn around for a Colonial Athletic Association series against the University of Delaware at Bill Edwards Stadium on March 30 and 31. First pitch for the doubleheader on Saturday against the Blue Hens is at 12 p.m. and the single game will follow on Sunday at 1 p.m.
