CLEARWATER, Fla. – Despite jumping out to a three-run lead during the first inning, the Hofstra University Softball team fell to the University of Utah, who is receiving votes in the latest USA Today/NFCA Coaches Poll, on Sunday, Feb. 17 by an 11-3 final at the Eddie C. Moore Complex.
The Pride (0-4) scattered three hits on the afternoon, including a double by senior
Courtney Scarpato and singles by freshmen Amanda Ioppolo and
Madison McKevitt. Fellow freshman Megan Giordano drew two walks and scored once for Hofstra.
Following a one-out walk during the top of the first, Giordano belted a double into the right-center field gap to bring home junior
Kristin Hallam from first base. The Pride took advantage of a fielding error and with two outs and the bases loaded, sophomore
Devyn Losco drew a walk to bring home a second run. Ioppolo capped off the big opening inning with a single through the left side of the infield to give Hofstra a 3-0 lead midway through the opening frame.
Utah got on the board in the bottom half of the inning on an unearned run and later leveled the scoring during the second inning when Julia Noskin delivered a two-run single between shortstop and third base.
After a quiet third inning, Utah took its first lead of the day on a three-run homerun by Alyssa Palacios. The Utes got another long ball off the bat of Hailey Hilburn with two outs to help Utah take an 8-3 lead into the fifth inning.
Utah set the Pride down in order during the top of the fifth and sixth innings, and rallied once again at the plate in the bottom of the sixth, plating three runs to earn the 11-3 victory in the final matchup in the Sunshine State for Hofstra.
Following a few days back in Hempstead, the Pride will travel to Mobile, Ala. for the Mardi Gras Invitational hosted by the University of South Alabama. Hofstra will open the weekend with a doubleheader on Friday, Feb. 22 against Nicholls State University and the University of Illinois.
