Cambridge, MA – The Pride recorded five victories but could not overcome two forfeit losses as Hofstra dropped a 24-19 Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) match to the Crimson of Harvard at the Malkin Athletic Center Saturday night.
Starting the match at 157, the Pride found themselves down 6-0 after close losses at 157 and 165. But sophomore
Ricky Stamm tied the match with an 8-4 decision over Tyler Tarsi at 174. Stamm improved to 17-12 overall and 12-7 in duals.
The win at 174 was the first of four consecutive Pride victories that gave Hofstra a 15-6 lead. Hofstra freshman
Trey Rogers (16-18) edged Harvard's Leonardo Tarantino, 7-5 at 184, senior
Nezar Haddad (14-12) topped Cole Bateman, 6-3 at 197 and junior
Omar Haddad (12-13) received a forfeit win at 285 to give the Pride the nine-point lead.
But the lead disappeared quickly as the Pride forfeited both the 125 and 133 pound matches and the Crimson recorded a win by fall at 141 to take an insurmountable 24-15 lead. Hofstra freshman
Holden Heller (14-8) closed out the contest with a 19-8 major decision over Harvard's Robert Groves at 149-pounds.
Hofstra fell to 6-13 on the season and 2-7 in the EIWA with the loss. Harvard is now 2-8 overall and 2-6 in conference duals.
Hofstra will close out the 2019 regular season schedule next Friday, February 22 when the Pride host George Mason at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. Match time for the Senior Night contest is 7 p.m.
