WREST: Hofstra Drops Three Matches At The West Virginia Quad

12/22/2019 9:00:00 PM

Morgantown, WV – The Hofstra Wrestling team wrapped up their 2019 portion of the 2019-20 season with three losses at the West Virginia Mountaineer Quad at the West Virginia Coliseum Sunday afternoon. The Pride dropped a 26-12 decision to the Fighting Scots of Edinboro, a 38-0 loss to the host Mountaineers of West Virginia, and a 21-17 loss to the Keydets of VMI.

In the first match of the day against Edinboro, the Pride got off to a great start, winning two of the first three matches as Dylan Ryder pinned Lucas Rodriguez at the 4:20 mark of the 125-lb. match and Vinny Vespa notched a 9-7 win over Nate Hagan at 141 for an early 9-3 advantage. But the Fighting Scots won the next five matches to take a 23-9 lead. Hofstra's Trey Rogers stopped the Edinboro run with a 9-5 decision over Dylan Reynolds at 197. Jon Spaulding closed out the match with a 4-3 decision over Zachary Knighton-Ward at 285 for the 26-12 final score. Edinboro improved to 6-2 with the Hofstra win, split the final two matches and is now 7-3 on the year.

The second match against West Virginia saw the Mountaineers record one pin at 149, one tech fall, one forfeit win and seven wins by decision on their way to a 38-0 victory. It was the first time that Hofstra has been shutout in a dual match since the first dual match of the 2016-17 season against Cornell, 39-0 in the Grapple at the Garden. West Virginia, which snapped a five match losing skid, won all three matches in the quad to improve to 3-5 on the season.

In the final match of the day for the Pride, Ryder and Vespa copied their Edinboro starts with a pin and a decision to give Hofstra another 9-3 lead. But VMI decisions at 149 and 157 tied the match at 9-9. Hofstra's Ricky Stamm gave the Pride a 13-9 advantage with an 8-0 major decision over Jon Hoover at 165. Hofstra forfeited the 174-lb match before VMI's Max Gallahan topped Charles Small, 8-5 at 184 for an 18-13 lead. Trey Rogers brought the Pride to within one at 18-17 with an 11-2 major decision at 197 setting up the winner takes all finale at 285.

In that final match between Hofstra's Zachary Knighton-Ward and VMI's Christopher Beck, the Keydet senior recorded a takedown in the final seconds of the match to post a 7-5 win and secure the match victory, 21-17.

Hofstra will return to action on Sunday, January 5 when the Pride host the Huskies of Bloomsburg at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. Match time is 1 p.m.
