HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Sophomore
Miri Taylor scored in the second half to overcome a 1-0 deficit as the Hofstra University Women's Soccer team played to a 1-1 draw against the UNCW Seahawks in Colonial Athletic Association action at the Hofstra Soccer Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Hofstra, who is now on an 11-game unbeaten streak, moved to 11-3-2 overall and 5-0-2 in the CAA while UNCW stands at 9-4-1 overall is 5-1-1 against league opponents.
UNCW nearly got on the board within the first five minutes of action, but freshman goalkeeper
Skylar Kuzmich made a point blank save to keep it scoreless. On the other end, Hofstra saw its first big threat when sophomore
Miri Taylor's shot hit the crossbar in the 17th minute. Ultimately, it was UNCW who found the scoreboard first when Emily Moxley took advantage of an open net to give the Seahawks a 1-0 edge just over 30 minutes in.
UNCW carried that lead into the half, but it wasn't long until nice passing inside the 18-yard box by junior
Sabrina Bryan and classmate
Lucy Porter led to Taylor's seventh goal of the season at the 54:15 mark. Rain picked up early in the second half and it was clear that both teams struggled to adjust to the slick surfaces, but Hofstra nearly broke the tie with 20 minutes remaining in regulation as Porter put one in the back of the net but was called offside.
UNCW had their chance to take the lead in the 83rd minute with back-to-back shots by Baley Edwards, but after a header that went high, the match was sent into extra time. Neither team made any significant threat in either overtime period, however Kuzmich made two of her season-best six saves across the final 20 minutes.
Hofstra will close out the regular season with two-straight road tests. The Pride will first travel to Towson on Thursday October 24 for a meeting with the Tigers at 7 p.m. at the Tiger Soccer Complex before trekking to William & Mary on Sunday, October 29.
