WTEN: Hofstra Falls To Towson In First Round Match

Elon, NC - Eight-seeded Towson defeated No. 9 Hofstra, 4-1, in the first round of the 2018 CAA Women's Tennis Championship on Thursday at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center on the campus of Elon University.

Towson (12-11) advances to face top-seeded William & Mary at 9 a.m. in Friday's quarterfinals, while Hofstra's season came to an end with a 10-14 mark.

The Pride and the Tigers played a competitive doubles competition. Hofstra's Michal Kaplan and Alejandra Ruffini posted a 6-2 win over Barbora Vasilkova and Lucy Gloninger at No. 3, but the Tigers pulled even at No. 2 as Renate van Oorschodt and AJ Gomer beat Ana Canahuate-Torres and Meheq Khokhar, 6-2. The point was decided at No. 1 where Towson's Lucy Williams and Yevgeniya Shusterman pulled out a 7-5 triumph over Sarah Catherine Herndon and Jasmine King.

Hofstra quickly tied the match at 1-1 as Odessa Stork topped van Oorschodt, 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 5 singles flight. However, Towson picked up three consecutive straight-set wins to clinch the match. Nicole Shakhnazarova defeated King, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 1, Gloniger bested Ronia Dolabany, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 6, and Shusterman topped Herndon, 6-2, 7-5 at No. 4.
