Queens, N.Y. and Hempstead, N.Y. – The Hofstra Softball team finished the weekend 4-0, picking up a 10-6 win at St. John's before defeating Binghamton, 9-1, in five innings at Bill Edwards Stadium to wrap up the St. John's Invitational.
The Pride (14-7) posted 26 hits, including four home runs, across Sunday's pair of games.
Game 1:
Sophomore
Kristin Hallam continued her weekend of hot hitting with a lead-off home run in the first inning at St. John's (7-17) to give Hofstra an early 1-0 lead. Hallam then doubled in the fourth to bring to bring in another run.
The Pride had a big sixth inning, with senior
Brittany Allocca hitting an RBI single before classmate
Brielle Pietrafesa slugged a three-run home run to open up a 6-0 Hofstra lead.
The Red Storm pulled three runs back in the bottom of the sixth on a sacrifice fly and a two-run homer, but the Pride pushed back in the top of the seventh. Hofstra loaded the bases on a lead-off double from senior
Michaela Transue and a pair of walks, and an RBI single from Pietrafesa scored the first of four runs to make it a 10-3 advantage for the Pride.
St. John's attempted to rally in the seventh, using a three-run home run to pull within four, but junior
Courtney Scarpato got out of the inning with no further damage and sealed the win.
Game 2:
The offensive onslaught continued in the second game, with senior
Sarah Edwards getting the Pride on the board in the first inning with an RBI single.
Hofstra loaded the bases in the second and brought in two more runs for a 3-0 lead.
Binghamton (3-10) pulled a run back in the third on an RBI double from Alex Guay, but the Pride didn't let up. Senior
Megan Patierno drilled a two-run home run to left-center in the bottom of the third before Pietrafesa hit her third homer of the weekend in the bottom of the fourth, scoring Allocca, who had doubled. Patierno picked up two more RBIs with a single in the fourth to cap the 9-1 win for Hofstra.
