SB: Wert’s Home Run Lifts Hofstra Over North Florida

Jacksonville, Fla. – Freshman Kimberly Wert hit her first career home run, a three-run blast, to give the Hofstra Softball team a 4-1 win over North Florida in nine innings.

The game was the Pride's fifth extra-inning game of the season and fourth of this Florida trip as Hofstra improved to 8-4 on the season, and the Ospreys dropped to 6-5.

Wert's blast came in the top of the ninth after seniors Brittany Allocca and Brielle Pietrafesa had walked to put runners on with two outs.

The Ospreys opened with two straight hits and executed the double steal to put runners on second and third, but the Pride escaped the inning unscathed.

Hofstra took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth. Junior Courtney Scarpato singled to left field to lead off, before a pinch-hit bunt single from freshman Jessie Joy and a hit from sophomore Kristin Hallam loaded the bases. Pietrafesa then walked with one out to bring in the run. Joy was thrown out at home as senior Sarah Edwards reached first to keep the bases loaded, but a ground out ended the inning.

North Florida answered in the bottom of the sixth to knot the score at one. Navia Penrod doubled to right-center and advanced to third, with a Kayla McGory bunt single bringing her home.

After Tiffany Lower singled for the Ospreys with one out in the bottom of the seventh, freshman pitcher Sophie Dandola (3-1) entered in relief. Lower got caught stealing at second, and Dandola threw a three-pitch strikeout to force extras.

The Pride loaded the bases in the top of the eighth, beginning with a lead-off double from PIetrafesa, but North Florida worked out of the jam without allowing a run.

Hofstra will now have a 10-day hiatus until its next game, returning to action on Friday, March 2, to take on Florida Gulf Coast and No. 9 Florida State at the Florida State Unconquered Invitational.
