Lake Buena Vista, Fl. – The Hofstra Softball team picked up a pair of wins, topping Kennesaw State, 8-0, in five innings and Stetson, 7-1, on Friday afternoon at the ESPN Wide World of Sports.
Senior
Brittany Allocca finished the day with three hits and five RBIs, including a two-run homerun, while classmate
Nikki Michalowski went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and three runs. Redshirt-junior
Lydia Witkowski also went 3-for-4, picking up four RBIs and three runs.
Sophomore pitcher
Sarah Cornell (4-1) allowed just three hits on the day, striking out 12 in the win over Stetson.
GAME 1:
The Pride (5-2) got off to an early start against the Owls (0-1), scoring two runs in the bottom of the first. Sophomore
Kristin Hallam led off with a bunt single, before Witkowski reached on a fielding error as she attempted a sacrifice bunt to advance Hallam. The two then executed the double steal, and Hallam came home on a wild pitch. Witkowski then scored the second run on a strikeout where the ball ended up in the dirt.
Hofstra then broke the game open in the bottom of the third. Michalowski got on base with a lead-off walk before Hallam singled. Witkowski then drilled a triple to left center to bring in two runs. Allocca then hit her first home run of the season, driving in another pair of runs for a 6-0 Hofstra lead.
Allocca sealed the five-inning win with a two-run double in the bottom of the fourth after Hallam had reached on a fielder's choice and Witkowski was hit by a pitch.
Cornell earned her third shutout in as many appearances, allowing just one hit and striking out three.
GAME 2:
The Pride got on the board in the bottom of the second against the Hatters (2-3). With two outs, senior
Nikki Michalowski doubled to center field to bring redshirt-senior
Michaela Transue home. The top of the lineup kept it going, with Hallam bringing Michalowski home with a bunt single that she made it to second on, and Witkowski doubling down the right-field line to bring in the third run.
It was Michalowski and Witkowski again in the bottom of the fifth, each doubling to make it 7-0. Michalowski's brought home Transue, who led off with a walk, and Patierno, who singled.
Stetson's Molly McLaughlin broke up Cornell's ploy for a no-hitter with a single in the top of the seventh. Lizzie Shubert then doubled to bring McLaughlin home for the Hatters' lone run.
Notes:
-Allocca is now tied for seventh all-time with 24 career home runs.
-Hallam has recorded a hit in each of the Pride's seven games so far.
-Cornell has recorded double-digit strikeouts on three occasions in five appearances.
