Hempstead, N.Y. – The Hofstra Women's Soccer team battled a tough Yale side, but ultimately fell, 3-2, in double overtime on Monday night at Hofstra Soccer Stadium.
The Pride dropped to 2-3-1 on the season while the Bulldogs (5-0) extended their season-opening win streak to five games.
Hofstra controlled the game in the first half, and senior
Kristin Desmond got the Pride on the board in the 21st minute with a rocket from 20 yards out on the right side for her third goal of the season. Yale then tallied twice in under three minutes to take a 2-1 lead: Ciara Ostrander put away Michelle Alozie's rebound in the 62nd minute before Alozie tapped a free kick to Noelle Higginson, who blasted a shot in the 64th minute.
But Hofstra responded quickly, as Desmond played a ball through to beat the goalkeeper and junior
Jenn Buoncore chipped it past a defender and into the open net to even the score at two just 2:03 after Yale had taken the lead.
Both teams had opportunities to put the game away in overtime, but the Bulldogs capitalized on a shot from Lydia Shaw with 3:12 to go in the second extra frame to take the win.
The Pride is back home with a pair of games this weekend, beginning with a tilt against local rival Fordham at 7 p.m. on Friday at Hofstra Soccer Stadium.
