Charleston, S.C. – Hofstra Softball fell to College of Charleston, 4-1, on Sunday afternoon at Patriots Point.
All of the games' runs came in the first inning, with both teams clamping down defensively the rest of the way.
Freshman
Kristin Hallam extended her hitting streak to 11 games, as the Pride out-hit the Cougars, 7-5.
The Pride scored early, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Hallam led off with a walk and stole second, before junior
Brittany Allocca dropped a single into right field with one out to put runners on the corners. Junior
Nikki Michalowski's sacrifice fly into center brought Hallam home.
Charleston responded in the bottom of the first, with Taylor DuPree leading off on a bunt single and moving to second on a sacrifice bunt. The Cougars then capitalized on a series of walks and a single to take a 4-1 lead. Hallam made a leaping grab at shortstop on DuPree to get the Pride out of the inning.
Junior
Sarah Edwards walked with one out in the top of the second, before classmate
Kaitlyne Musa drilled a single into left field for runners on first and second. DuPree then returned the favor on Hallam, snagging a hard-hit line drive out of the air at third to halt the Pride's threat.
Freshman pitcher
Alyssa Irons stepped into the circle in the bottom of the second inning, getting three quick outs, with the help of
Brielle Pietrafesa making a sharp throw from right field to first for the second out. Irons followed up with a pair of strikeouts in the bottom of the third.
Freshman
Sam Tomasetti led off the fourth inning with a double to the wall in right-center, chasing Sydney Shipley out of the circle in favor of fellow senior Sam Martin. Edwards then lined a single right Martin and Musa walked, loading the bases with no outs. But a strikeout and a double play got the Cougars out of the inning.
DuPree reached safely with another bunt single in the bottom of the fourth, but Musa's throw to
Lacey Clark at second caught her stealing for the second out.
The Pride worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the sixth to keep the game at 4-1.
Sophomore
Courtney Scarpato drew a four-pitch walk in the top of the seventh before Hallam singled up the middle to put runners on first and second with no outs, but a fly-out and a double play ended the game.
Hofstra heads to non-conference opponent Lehigh for a doubleheader at 2 p.m. on Wednesday.
