Lewisburg, PA - Hofstra University freshman
Vinny Vespa placed fifth at 133-pounds and Hofstra finished 14th as a team at the 2017 Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association Championships Saturday at Bucknell University.
Hofstra compiled 18 team points in the 16 team field, finishing ahead of Franklin & Marshall (3.5) and Sacred Heart (0.5). Cornell, which had four champions, won the team title with 163 points. The win was the 11th consecutive team championship for the Big Red.
Vespa opened his day with a 5-2 win over second-seeded Esteban Gomez-Rivera of American in the consolation bracket quarterfinals. He then suffered a pinfall loss in 3:36 to the No. 4 seed, Mark Grey of Cornell, in the consolation semifinals.
That sent Vespa to the fifth-place match, which he won by medical default over Kevin Devoy of Drexel, who was seeded third.
