Fort Myers, Fla. – Freshman pitcher
Sarah Cornell allowed just two hits as Hofstra Softball topped Boston College, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon at FGCU Softball Complex in the final day of the FGCU/Four Points Sheraton Invitational.
Senior
Lacey Clark, junior
Kaitlyne Musa and sophomore
Courtney Scarpato each recorded hits for the Pride in the win.
Hofstra (5-5) loaded the bases in the bottom of the third; freshman
Kristin Hallam reached on a fielder's choice, junior
Brielle Pietrafesa walked and classmate
Megan Patierno reached on a fielding error. Another Boston College error brought all three home to give the Pride a 3-0 lead.
The Eagles (8-7) pulled a run back and spoiled the shutout in the top of the seventh on Tatiana Cortez'z solo home run with one out. The next batter fouled out before Cornell walked Chloe Dubocq, but a pop up to shortstop ended the game.
After giving up a hit in the first inning, Cornell (5-0) retired the side in order in five straight innings. She finished with three walks and two strikeouts.
The Pride had gotten its first chance to score in the second inning. Clark walked, and junior
Brittany Allocca used a sacrifice bunt to advance Clark to second. Musa then singled to put runners on first and third, but a pair of strikeouts ended the inning.
Hofstra heads to Longwood next weekend for a three-game series.
