Philadelphia, PA – The Hofstra University Women's Tennis Team saw its two singles entrants –
Michal Kaplan and
Alejandra Ruffini – post first round wins at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northeast Regional at the University of Pennsylvania Thursday afternoon.
Kaplan posted a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Rhode Island's Mihaela Codreanu to advance to the second round, where she will meet up with Boston College's Asiy Dain. Dain is seeded in the 3-4 block and had a first round bye.
Ruffini, who won a pair of qualifying matches Wednesday to make the main draw, kept up her strong play with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Sabrina Faybyslev of Boston University. Faybyslev was ranked among the top 300 junior tennis players by the ITF. Ruffini will face Columbia's Jennifer Kerr in the second round. Kerr is among the 17-32 seeds and received a first round bye.
The Pride's doubles team of
Sarah Catherine Herndon and
Disha Yellayi was defeated in their first round match, falling to Cornell's Cheyenne Lilienthal and Madison Stevens by an 8-4 score.
The ITA Northeast Regional continues with second round action Friday.
