WSOC: Hofstra Claims CAA Regular-Season Title With Win Over Elon On Senior Day

Hempstead, N.Y. – The Hofstra Women's Soccer team honored its eight seniors prior to Sunday's game, but the Pride made sure its time at Hofstra Soccer Stadium was not over, topping Elon, 2-0, to claim the Colonial Athletic Association regular-season championship and earn the right to host the CAA Tournament.

The Pride (12-3-2, 8-0 CAA) has been dominant this season, outscoring its opponents, 20-2, over an 11-game unbeaten streak. Elon dropped to 8-5-4 overall and 1-3-3 in conference play.

A pair of freshmen helped lift the Pride over the Phoenix, with Bella Richards getting Hofstra on the board in the 36th minute. Senior Rhian Cleverly took the initial shot, which ricocheted off the post and back to Richards, who put away a rebound amidst a flurry of shots for her second goal of the year. Freshman Lucy Shepherd then tacked on the insurance goal in the 83rd minute, corralling a pass from senior Kristin Desmond and going one-on-one with the Elon goalkeeper, chipping it past for her third tally of the season.

The Pride has a full week off before closing the regular season at Charleston next Sunday at 1 p.m.

Notes:
-Goalkeepers Jenna Borresen and Ashley Wilson teamed up to make five saves for the Pride's 10th shutout of the season.
-Hofstra's CAA regular-season title is its third under Head Coach Simon Riddiough (2010, 2015).
-A freshman has accounted for at least one goal in each of the Pride's last five games. The freshman class has 12 points over that span.
-The Pride will host the CAA semifinals on Nov. 3 and the championship game on Nov. 5.
