BB: Leiderman's Home Run Lifts Hofstra Past Charleston In 11 Innings

Hempstead, NY - David Leiderman's two-run home run in the bottom of the 11th inning lifted Hofstra past league-leading College of Charleston, 4-3, Friday evening at University Field. The Cougars had taken a 3-2 lead in the 11th.

Hofstra improved to 10-24 overall and 2-7 in the Colonial Athletic Association with the win. Charleston slipped to 21-12-1 overall and 5-2 in the CAA.

Hofstra's Chris Weiss and Charleston's Nathan Helvey engaged in a pitcher's duel as the game was scoreless until the sixth. That's when Charleston struck for two runs An infield single, a walk and a wild pitch put runners on second and third with one out before Alex Pastorius singled in both runners for a 2-0 lead.

The Pride rallied in the eighth to tie the game, scoring two unearned runs. Chris Hardardt reached on a throwing error and went to second on Max Dolente's single. With Stephen Foster batting, the Cougars dropped a foul popup for a second error, prolonging Foster's at-bat. The miscue proved costly as he proceeded to double in the first run and send pinch runner Tom Archer to third. Mat Annunziata tied the game with a ground ball out.

The game stayed scoreless until the 11th when Bradley Jones led off and hit a solo home run of Pride reliever Andrew Mundy to give the Cougars the lead. But Hofstra got to Charleston closer Carter Love in its turn at bat. Brad Witkowski drew a leadoff walk but was erased on a fielder's choice from Nick Bottari. That brought up Leiderman, who had homered in his previous two games. The red-shirt junior took the first pitch he saw deep over the left centerfield fence to give Hofstra the win.

Weiss pitched a career-high nine innings, allowing two runs on six hits with seven strikeouts. Mundy (1-0), a freshman, picked up his first career win, allowing the one run on two hits with two strikeouts in two innings of work.

Helvey went 7 1/3 innings, allowing the two unearned runs on six hits with five strikeouts. Love (2-2), the Cougars fourth pitcher, took the loss after allowing two runs on one hit in 1 1/3 innings of work.

The teams will continue the series Saturday at 1 p.m. John Rooney will start for Hofstra against Bailey Ober.

NOTES:
-Leiderman's home run was his fourth of the season
