WSOC: Hofstra Drops Season Opener To UConn

Storrs, Conn. – UConn's Rachel Hill scored a penalty kick goal in the first minute of the second half to account for the game's only offense as Hofstra fell to the Huskies, 1-0, in the 2014 season opener on Friday night at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium.

Hofstra sophomore goalkeeper Friederike Mehring made six saves, including three in the second half, but a 46th minute goal set up by a Pride infraction in the box was the difference in the first game of the new campaign for both teams. Hofstra fell to 12-11 all time on Opening Day and 1-4-1 in the all-time series against UConn.

Senior forward Amber Stobbs had back-to-back close-range shots inside the box, but UConn goalkeeper Emily Armstrong made two saves near the right post in the 56th minute. Sophomore Emily Agudelo also challenged with another on-target shot in the following minute that Armstrong also stopped. Stobbs had two of Hofstra's seven shots-on-net.

Armstrong made seven saves and Hill, who was named the America Athletic Conference's Preseason Co-Offensive Player of the Year, provided the only offense and racked up nine total shots as the Huskies held a 21-10 shot advantage.

Senior Sam Scolarici and junior Leah Galton, who is the reigning CAA Player of the Year, were held to just three combined shots and one shot-on-goal. Freshmen Kristin Desmond, Emily Hulbert and Katie Gerdes made their collegiate debuts. Desmond earned the start on the back line for the Pride in front of a listed crowd of 509.

Hofstra senior Lulu Echeverry gave Hofstra a chance to tie it late with an 80th-minute shot that Armstrong stopped. Scolarici provided the Pride's final salvo with a header shot that went high in the 84th minute.

Hofstra will start the home portion of the schedule on Sunday at noon versus Bucknell. To purchase tickets, call the Hofstra Athletics Ticket Office at (516) HOF-TIXX.
