Hempstead, NY - Here is this week's edition of Hofstra Happenings, a weekly look at the latest news in Pride Athletics.

Booth Wins EIWA Title, Hofstra Sending Four Grapplers To NCAA Championships

Graduate wrestler Joe Booth won the EIWA title at 165 pounds and three other Pride wrestlers - Jamie Franco, Cody Ruggirello and Luke Vaith - qualified as at-large selections to the NCAA Championships. Booth is Hofstra's first EIWA champion.

Women's Basketball Ends Regular Season, Heads To CAA Championship This Week

The Pride women's basketball team picked up a pair of wins to close the regular season, downing William & Mary on the road in double-overtime and then defeating NJIT at the Mack Sports Complex. Hofstra will head to the CAA Championship this week as the No. 5 seed and will meet fourth-seeded Drexel Friday afternoon in the quarterfinals.

Men's Basketball Season Ends In CAA Quarterfinals

The Pride men's basketball team defeated UNCW in the opening round of the CAA Championship before falling to top-seeded Delaware in the quarterfinals. Graduate forward Zeke Upshaw earned second team All-CAA Accolades, while classmate Dion Nesmith was a third team choice. Nesmith was also named to the CAA All-Academic Team. Freshman Jamall Robinson was a CAA All-Rookie selection.

Basketball Practice Facility Update

Work on the Hofstra Basketball Practice Facility has increased significantly lately as steel beams are being delivered and installed. These beams will support the new wall being constructed on the south side of the facility. In addition, work on the ceiling and walls has begun with both receiving their first treatment of paint this past week.

Men's Lacrosse Extends Win Streak To Three Games

Hofstra's men's lacrosse team continued its torid play with a win over Ohio State behind the performances of sophomore Sam Llinares and senior Torin Varn. Llinares had three goals and an assist, while Varn added two goals. Hofstra will host Delaware in their CAA opener this Saturday at 3 p.m. Tickets are available by calling (516) HOF-TIXX or by visiting GoHofstra.com/tix. Women's Lacrosse Keeps Up WInning Ways

The Pride women's lacrosse team picked up a pair of wins last week to run their winning streak to three games. Hofstra downed Marist at home Friday night before heading to Quinnipiac Sunday and winning by a 13-7 score. In the game at Quinnipiac, junior Brittain Altomare had a career-best nine points on four goals and five assists, and was named the CAA Player of the Week. Freshman Tiana Parrella, who scored twice versus Marist and once at Quinnipiac was the CAA Rookie of the Week.

Softball Splits Four Games At FAU Tournament; Host Hofstra Invitational This Weekend

The Hofstra Softball team split four games at the Florida Atlantic Tournamnet this past weekend, winning over Virginia Tech (6-2) and Florida Atlantic (7-2) and losing to Michigan State (1-0) and Illinois (2-0). The Pride host the Hofstra Invitational this Friday through Sunday. Sophomore Caryn Bailey had a grand slam home run to beat Virginia Tech.

Baseball Spilts Series At Incarnate Word; Travel To Rutgers and Furman This Week

The Pride baseball team was in San Antonio, TX, for a four-game series with Incarnate Word. Hofstra defeated the Cardinals in a doubleheader, 9-3 and 4-2, but lost the opening and closing games of the series. Junior Brian MacDonald had a grand slam home run in the 9-3 win, while senior Matt Ford hit the game-winning two-run shot in the 12th inning of the 4-2 win. The Pride play at Rutgers Tuesday and travel to Furman this weekend.

Men's Tennis Starts CAA Play Off On Winning Note

Hofstra's men's tennis team defeated Delaware, 4-3, in the CAA opener for both schools Saturday night. Joseph Erichsen, Matthew Gemmell and Beau Wills each had singles wins for the Pride.

CAA Features On Jamall Robinson and Anma Onyeuku

The Colonial Athletic Association, through their CAA Hoops on Campus program, featured the Pride's Jamall Robinson and Anma Onyeuku in their final videos of the season..

 

Staub Named To Strength And Conditioning Position

Former University of Kansas and University of Connecticut Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach Joe Staub has been named Hofstra's new head strength and conditioning coach. We welcome Joe to the Pride Family!
