WSOC: Galton’s Second Straight Hat Trick Lifts Hofstra Into CAA Semifinals

Hempstead, N.Y. – Junior forward Leah Galton notched a hat trick for a second consecutive games in accounting for all the goals in Hofstra's 3-0 win over Towson in the Colonial Athletic Association Championship quarterfinal round on Sunday afternoon at Hofstra Soccer Stadium.

Galton ended the regular season with her first career hat trick versus Delaware on Oct. 26. Exactly one week later, the Harrogate, England native posted a goal 2:08 in and scored 1:50 apart in the second half to help Hofstra improve to 12-6-1 and advance to the semifinal round against James Madison on Friday at 3 p.m. at top-seeded Northeastern's campus.

Galton tallied eight shots, which tied the entire Towson output as the Tigers ended its season at 6-9-4. Hofstra held the Tigers to just one shot-on goal, which sophomore goalkeeper Friederike Mehring stopped for her fourth individual shutout of the season and fifth total of 2014.

Hofstra held Towson to just that single on-target shot in two games this season after not allowing one in the Pride's 1-0 regular season win over the Tigers on Oct. 5.
Senior Lulu Echeverry ensured her final career appearance at Hofstra Soccer Stadium produced a noteworthy play in just the third minute when her crisp right-wing cross went right to Galton in the box. Galton squared up the shot and headed in a shot past goalkeeper Erin Quinn for the opening goal.

That was the difference in the first half as Hofstra built an 8-2 shot advantage. The Pride received an emotional boost when freshman Kristin Desmond made her first appearance since suffering an injury on Sept. 26. Desmond, who was Hofstra's starting defender, played at forward when she entered the game and finished with one shot-on-goal.

Entering the game, Hofstra's offense boasted the 1-2 goal-scorers and points leaders in the conference in senior Sam Scolarici and Galton. The duo showed how potent the attacking end can be for the Pride when Scolarici linked with Galton, with the former serving in a pass from the right side into the box that Galton buried from nine yards out for a 2-0 lead in the 48th minute.

Less than two minutes later, Galton showed her ability to create her own shot on the left wing with a left-footed hard shot that went off Quinn's hands and into the net. Galton had not scored a hat trick in 58 career games but now has done it twice in as many games. With six tallies in her last two games, Galton has 16 on the season, moving one past Scolarici for the CAA lead.

With her six point game, Galton has 90 career points, which moved her past Suzanne Newell for second-most on the team's all-time list. Scolarici is the leader. With 16 goals, Galton has the third-highest single-season total in program history.

Scolarici finished with seven shots while the back line of Mallory UIlrich, Caylin Dudley, Rhian Cleverly and Emily Agudelo provided strong support throughout.

Towson's Quinn made five saves before being replaced by Taylor Sebalao in the final minute.

Hofstra has won three in a row and is unbeaten in its last seven (6-0-1). The team's last loss came to JMU on Oct. 3 at home with a 3-1 defeat. The teams will now meet in the rematch in the semifinal round.
