Senior Tessa Ziemba hit a two-run home run and drove in four runs total and junior Tori Rocha registered a three-run triple to lift Hofstra to 22-10 and 5-1 in league play. All nine Hofstra starters reached base safely and eight recorded base hits to help the Pride win for the 19th time in the last 21 games. Drexel fell to 10-22 and 0-7 in the CAA.
Hofstra has now defeated CAA opponents in 27 of the last 28 games and is 35-1 in the last 36 regular season league matchups. Against Drexel, Hofstra is now 53-10 in the all-time series.
Hofstra used a patient approach at the plate to score two runs in the top of the first in forcing Drexel starter Tara Konopka to throw close to 30 pitches. Slap-hitting freshman Chloe Fitzgerald took advantage of the draw-in infield to hit a leadoff single through the box.
The speedy Fitzgerald stole second before Konopka struck out the next two batters. But Erin Trippi walked to extend the inning and Ziemba lined a two-run double into the right-center gap to stake Galati to the early 2-0 lead.
Konopka appeared to settle down, retiring the next nine batters, including consecutive flyouts to start the fourth. But the Pride saw the next nine batters reach base safely with Galati singling through the left sidde and senior Becca Bigler drawing a walk.
Hawkins then rocketed a base hit to left that took a bad hop, allowing Galati to score and Bigler to advance to third on the RBI double. Fellow freshman Caryn Bailey then smashed an infield single off Konopka's leg to score Bigler for the 4-0 lead.
Fitzgerald walked to load the bases and Rocha hit a low liner to left that Maggy Fermo tried to catch by charging in and diving for the ball. The outfielder came up empty and the ball rolled to the wall to score three.
Senior Jess Hirschbuhl then pulled a RBI double to left and Trippi followed with a RBI single. Ziemba then capped the inning with a two-run opposite-field home run to left against the wind
Ziemba now leads Hofstra with 12 home runs and 33 RBIs. The Wilmington, Del. native has 37 career home runs, which is just three off Ashley Lane's career record of 40 set from 2004-07. Ziemba also has 163 career RBIs, which trails only Lane's record of 180.
Galati made the lead stand up by throwing her seventh shutout of the season in improving to 19-9 while lowering her ERA to 1.89. The West Babylon, N.Y. product has struck out double-digit batters in five of her last six starts. Konopka logged a complete game in falling to 6-10.
Hofstra will conclude the three-game series with the Dragons with a doubleheader tomorrow starting at 11 a.m.
