WTEN: Ivanova Advances to "A" Quarterfinals After First Day of West Point Invitational

West Point, NY - Elena Ivanova advanced to the quarterfinals of Flight "A" singles and Christie Gattelaro reached the consolation quarterfinals after day one of the West Point Eastern Invitational Friday.

Ivanova defeated Tayler Hampshire (Lehigh) in her first round match, 6-1, 6-1, and then upset third-seeded Yuliana Motyl (Massachusetts) in the round of 16, 6-4, 6-2. She will meet the #5 seed Adrienne Markison (Quinnipiac) in Saturday's quarterfinals.

Gattelaro, who is playing at the "C" Flight, lost her first round match to Pitt's Jocelyn Lu (4-6, 3-6) to drop into the consolation round. In her first round consolation mathc, she upset #6 Tristany Leikem of Rhode Island, 8-3. Gattelaro then receievd a second round bye and will meet Lennea Enoh-Janssen (Saint Peter's) in the consolation quarters.

At Flight "B" singles Sonia Tsay dropped both of her matches Friday, falling in the first round to #6 Emily Stein (Army), 0-6, 2-6, and then in the consolation round to Providence's Maria Clara-Bernandez, 8-2.

Paige Polizois won her first round match at "D" singles, defeating Maria Baroussa (St. Bonaventure), 6-2, 3-6, 10-3. In her second round match, Polizois lost a tough 6-2, 3-6, 9-11, decision to six-seeded Carly Riney of Army. Polizois will drop into Saturday's consolation bracket.

In doubles play the team of Laura Newman and Malissa Gilanchi received a first round bye and then lost a round of 16 match to the #4 seed, Mimi Bell and Jen Newman of Amherst College, 8-4. Gilanchi and Newman will compete in the consolation quarterfinals match Saturday.
