Sixth-seeded UNC Wilmington, #7 Hofstra and #8 James Madison posted victories in the first round of the CAA Women's Tennis Championship Thursday afternoon at Huntington Park Tennis Center.
UNCW defeated #11 Drexel, 4-0, Hofstra downed #10 Towson, 4-1 and JMU beat #9 George Mason, 4-2 to advance to the quarterfinals on Friday.
With the win Hofstra improves to 14-9 overall with its fourth straight win and fifth win in its last six matches.
Hofstra claimed the doubles point with an 8-2 victory by Christie Gattelaro and Stacey Kent over Towson's Amanda Scatuorchio and Jaclyn Tamburo at number two and an 8-6 triumph by the Pride's Morganne Downing and Valerie McDonald over the Tigers' Cassandra Ng and Beth Daub at number three. In singles play, Towson's Natalie Walten posted a 6-3, 6-1 win over Hofstra's McDonald at number six, but Hofstra closed out the match with three victories. Hofstra's Lauren Clifton beat Ng, 6-0, 6-1 at number two, Stacey Kent topped Ashley Peretz 6-3, 6-2 at number four and Downing blanked Daub 6-0, 6-0 at number five.
UNCW captured the doubles point as Kayla Schwenk and Lauren Isenhour defeated the Dragons' Emily Lewis and Mellissa Lewis 8-1 at number one doubles and the Seahawks' Priscilla Roberts and Hartley Collins beat Drexel's Gabi Marginean and Jaimee Wylie, 8-1 at number two. In singles action. Schwenk topped Emily Lewis 6-0, 6-1 at number two, Isenour blanked Mellissa Lewis, 6-0, 6-0 at number three and Chelsea Kahle beat Wylie, 6-2, 6-0 at number five.
JMU recorded the doubles point as Rebecca Erickson and Kristin Nimitz beat George Mason's Lindsay Gray and Alicia Van Zandt, 8-3 at number one and the Dukes' Alyssa Brandalik and Barrett Donner edged Meredith Cutchin and Alexandria LaCoste, 9-7. JMU got a 6-2, 6-1 win by Nimitz over Stacey Berlinger at number two and a 6-3, 6-1 triumph by Anna Khoor over Sarah Dieffenbach, 6-3, 6-1 at number three. Mason responded with a 6-3, 7-5 triumph by Gray over Erickson at number one and a 6-1, 6-3 win by Cutchin over Donner at number six. JMU clinched the win when Kelly Maxwell outlasted Mason's Julia Moscato, 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 at number four.
In Friday's quarterfinals, #3 Old Dominion will meet #6 UNC Wilmington at 9 a.m., #2 VCU will face #7 Hofstra at 11:30 a.m., #1 William and Mary will take on #8 James Madison at 2 p.m. and #4 Georgia State will challenge #5 Delaware at 3:30 p.m.
