OLIVER WINS PITCHER OF THE WEEK

4/30/2007 4:00:00 PM

Junior pitcher Courtney Oliver (Swansea, MA/Coyle and Cassidy) was named the Colonial Athletic Association Softball Pitcher of the Week, it was announced today by the conference office.

Oliver becomes the fourth different player to earn a CAA Award this season. Sophomore pitcher Kayliegh Lotti (South Attleboro, MA) has earned the Pitcher of the Week honor four times, including last week, when freshman first baseman Michele DePasquale (Waterford, NJ) earned Rookie of the Week honors. Senior right fielder Ashley Lane (Westbury, NY) won CAA Player of the Week honors on April 9.

Oliver earned this week's award after tallying a 2-0 record and an 0.68 earned run average in a 4-0 week for the Pride. The highlight of her week was a seven inning no-hitter on Tuesday against Long Island University in a game that she was not scheduled to start. Lotti suffered a minor injury in the pitching circle on her first warm-up toss in the middle of the first inning and never threw an official pitch. Oliver came in as the emergency starter and threw a seven-inning no-hitter, walking three and striking out three to snap LIU's 18-game winning streak.

In the Pride's CAA weekend series with Drexel, Oliver was called from the bullpen in the third inning of the second game of Saturday's doubleheader with Hofstra holding a narrow lead and threw 3.1 innings, allowing two hits and one earned run. The run came on a solo homer in the bottom of the sixth with the Pride already ahead 10-1. For the week, opponents hit only .065 off her, while she struck out six and walked five in 10.1 innings of work.

Oliver also won the CAA Pitcher of the Week Award once last season, after throwing a five-inning no-hitter in an 8-0 win over Drexel. She also had a pair of hits for the Pride at the plate in the Drexel series.

Hofstra (33-13, 14-3 CAA) will next be in action when it entertains Quinnipiac on Thursday for a 4 p.m. contest before closing out the regular season with a three-game conference series against UNC Wilmington on Saturday and Sunday. Hofstra enters the final weekend tied for first place in the CAA with James Madison, and the Pride would earn the right to host the CAA Tournament if it is able to win all three games with UNC Wilmington, due to its head-to-head tiebreaker with James Madison.
