STOKES REACHES 1,999 POINTS AS PRIDE DEFEATS NORTHEASTERN

2/3/2007 6:00:00 PM

Senior guard Loren Stokes (Buffalo, NY - pictured) scored 21 points, leaving him one point shy of 2,000 in his career, as the Hofstra Men's Basketball team captured an 82-66 win over Northeastern on Saturday afternoon in front of a sellout crowd of 5,047 at the Mack Sports Complex.

Stokes is now just one point shy of becoming the fifth player in school history to reach 2,000 points. He was joined in double figures by senior guard Carlos Rivera (San German, PR) with 21 and junior guard Antoine Agudio (Huntington Station, NY) with 19, giving the Pride 61 points from its three-man backcourt. Sophomore forward Mike Davis-Sabb anchored the frontcourt with seven points and a career-high 13 rebounds.

The win improves Hofstra's record to 18-6 on the season and 11-2 in the CAA, leaving it one game behind first-place Virginia Commonwealth (12-1). It was also the Pride's 28th straight regular season home win and its 22nd straight CAA home win. Northeastern falls to 7-17 overall and 5-8 in conference play with the loss. The win was also the 99th for Hofstra Head Coach Tom Pecora, improving his career record to 99-78.

Hofstra led by as many as 15 points in the first half at 39-24, after Agudio keyed a 13-3 run with six points. Northeastern whittled the lead down to 40-29 at the half, and scored the first five points of the second half to bring the score within 40-34. The Huskies had the lead down to six on two other occasions, the last coming with 7:39 to go when a three-pointer from Adrian Martinez cut the lead to 65-59. However, Stokes and Agudio each scored four points during an 8-1 run, as the Pride took a 73-60 lead to put the game away.

Stokes and Agudio maintained their status as one of only two pairs of teammates in the country averaging over 20 points a game (Stokes now averages 20.9, Agudio 20.3). In addition, Stokes, Agudio and Rivera passes New Orleans as the highest-scoring three-man backcourt in the country, increasing their combined average to 52.1 points per contest.

Northeastern placed five players in double figures in the losing effort, led by 16 from freshman guard Matt Janning. Senior guard Bobby Kelly had 14, senior guard Adrian Martinez added 13, senior forward Bennet Davis had 11, and sophomore forward Eugene Spates added 10 off the bench.

Hofstra held a 37-27 advantage on the boards and turned the ball over only nine times, the third game in a row and the fourth in the last five that it has had less than 10 turnovers. Rivera added six assists, six rebounds and four steals to his 21 points.

The Pride will next be in action when it hosts Drexel on Thursday for a 7 p.m. contest, which will be televised locally on Sportsnet New York.
