Senior pitcher Patrick Rogers (Centereach, NY - pictured) struck out 10 in five innings and retired the final 14 batters he faced and seven Hofstra Pride pitchers combined on a three-hitter as the Pride baseball team defeated Coppin State, 17-2, to complete a three-game series sweep Sunday at University Field. Hofstra improved to 3-6 while Coppin State fell to 0-7.
Rogers allowed three hits to the first four batters he faced as Coppin State took a 1-0 lead, but the right-hander cruised the rest of the way. Rogers allowed the three hits and walked none, struck out at least one batter in each inning and struck out the side in the second and fifth innings. After Coppin State's final hit-a one-out single by freshman first baseman Harry Williams-Hofstra pitchers faced the minimum 23 batters through the end of the eighth inning. Overall, Pride pitchers recorded 16 strikeouts.
Hofstra put the game away with a 10-run sixth inning in which the Pride tripled three times and sent 15 batters to the plate. Freshman left fielder Dion Pouncil (Chicago, IL) and sophomore centerfielder Nick Panzarella (Three Bridges, NJ) each scored twice in the inning. Panzarella finished 3-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored while Pouncil, freshman right fielder John Kenny (Franklin Square, NY) and freshman catcher George Carroll (Bayside, NY) all had two RBI each.
Coppin State was led by senior shortstop Teon Richburg and junior outfielder Marcus Robin. Richburg drove Robin home twice with a first inning single and a ninth inning groundout. Junior pitcher Sebastian Fomenko, the second of four Eagles hurlers, took the loss after allowing 17 runs (14 earned) on 16 hits and three walks in 4 2/3 innings. Freshman Archie Scott tossed two scoreless innings.
Hofstra returns to action Friday at 3 p.m., when it hosts Saint Peter's College in the first game of a three-game series. Coppin State hosts Lehigh Wednesday.
