PERFECT PRIDE SEND NINE TO CAA SEMIFINALS

3/4/2005 10:00:00 PM

The Hofstra wrestling team recorded a perfect 11-0 record on Friday and advanced all nine of its wrestlers to Saturday's semifinals at the 2005 Colonial Athletic Association Wrestling Championships at Boston University.

Hofstra is on top of the Championships standings after day one with 33 points while Rider has 27.5 and Drexel with 23. The top-seeded Pride will be looking for their fourth consecutive CAA Wrestling Championship and their fifth straight conference title on Saturday. The semifinal round will begin at noon with the finals scheduled for 6 p.m.

Hofstra senior Paul Siemon (pictured) and sophomore James Strouse were the busiest on Friday as both posted opening round and quarterfinal victories. Siemon (22-7) recorded a tech fall victory over Andrew Silber from Sacred Heart 23-5 in the opening round and then bounced back from a near-fall to post a 14-6 major decision over Brian Hocum from Campbell. Strouse (19-10) tallied a tech fall over Derick Schoenly from James Madison 16-0 (5:41) in the first round and then posted a win by fall over Broc Dickerson from Campbell in 1:15 in the quarterfinals.

Two-time defending conference champion at 197, senior Chris Skretkowicz (26-2) posted one of four Hofstra pins on Friday in his victory over Zack Winfrey from James Madison in 1:48. Junior Jon Masa (18-9) posted his fastest pin of the season with a 52 second fall over William Sheridan from Campbell. Junior Mike Patrovich (11-3) also posted his fastest fall of the season with a pin of Casey Galligan from Campbell in 2:08 in the 165-pound quarterfinal match. It was Patrovich's second pin of the year.

Freshmen Dave Tomasette (17-11) and Joe Rovelli (20-7) and seniors Ricky LaForge (23-5) and Paul Siemon (23-7) recorded major decision victories for the Pride while freshman Charles Griffin (25-4) had an 8-2 decision over Shawn Horste from James Madison at 133 pounds.

Last year, the Pride sent eight wrestlers to the CAA Championship finals with four winning conference titles. The school record for most conference titles is six, set in 2003.
