VILLANOVA, Pennsylvania (Sept. 5) - Wildcats quarterback Brett Gordon completed 26 of 35 passes for 234 yards and four touchdowns to lead seventh-ranked Villanova (5-1, 3-1) to a 35-7 Atlantic 10 Conference victory over Hofstra (2-4, 2-3) Saturday afternoon at Villanova Stadium. The Wildcats won their third straight contest while Hofstra dropped its third straight contest, the first time the Pride have done that since 1996.

The Wildcats got on the board late in the first quarter after Hofstra quarterback Ryan Cosentino had his pass blocked and picked off by Villanova linebacker Brian Hulea at the Pride 16 yardline. On a third and 10 play at the Hofstra 16 yardline, Wildcats quarterback Brett Gordon hit Brian White on a slant pattern for the Villanova touchdown. Adam James' PAT was good and the Wildcats had a 7-0 lead with 45 seconds to play in the period.

The Wildcats boosted the lead to 14-0 2:49 into the second quarter as Gordon hit Shaz Brown on  a 13-yard scoring pass to cap a seven-play, 53-yard drive in 2:36.

Villanova added two more touchdowns late in the second period. After a Hofstra drive ended on the Villanova 24 yardline with 9:33 to play in the half, Gordon engineered a 15-play, 76-yard drive in 5:44 capped by Gordon's third touchdown pass of the game, this time a three-yard pass to fullback Phil DiGiacomo. The big play in the drive was 13-yard completion to Shaz Brown on a third-and-11 play at the Hofstra 20 yardline. Four plays later Gordon and DiGiacomo hooked up for a 21-0 lead.

After a three-and-out Hofstra possession and a 19-yartd punt that gave the Wildcats the ball on the Hofstra 33, it took Gordon only six plays to get into the end zone again, finding Anthony Wright for a six-yard scoring pass and a 28-0 lead at halftime.

In the third quarter, Villanova got the ball for the first time on their own three yardline. The Wildcats marched 97 yards on 13 plays in 4:47 with Cameron Cross carrying it into the end zone from 12 yards out for a 35-0 lead. Villanova converted two big third down plays in the drive, part of a streak of 11 consecutive third down conversions the Wildcats had in the contest.

Hofstra ended Villanova's thoughts of a shutout with just 1:14 to play in the contest as sophomore quarterback Andrew English, in relief of starter Ryan Cosentino, engineered a four play, 47-yard drive and hit freshman Devale Ellis with a 33-yard pass and run play.

The Wildcats rang up 397 yards on offense including 234 through the air. Gordon utilized 10 receivers in the contest spreading the ball around the Hofstra defense. Terry Butler led the Villanova ground game with 91 yards on 17 carries while Cameron Cross had 49 yards rushing on 5 runs and also caught a team-high six passes for 51 yards. Hofstra was held to a season-low 259 yards including just 94 on the ground. Quarterback Ryan Cosentino completed 14 of 28 passes for 122 yards hitting Isaac Irby (36 yards) and Ricky Bryant (28 yards) with four passes each. Junior running back Trevor Dimmie moved closer to the Hofstra all-time career rushing record with 42 yards on nine carries. Dimmie needs just 18 yards to break Bill Sanford's (1951-54) mark of 2,503 career rushing yards.

Hofstra will host William and Mary next Saturday, October 12 at Shuart Stadium in its annual Homecoming contest. Hofstra will retire the jersey of former Flying Dutchmen and current New York Jets receiver Wayne Chrebet at halftime of the contest.
